I think we can all pretty much agree that toys are awesome unless you’re the person that has to pay for them! Especially when you don’t even get to be the one they’re meant for unless it’s the really annoying toy that makes a ton of noise, takes a million batteries, and is given as a gift to your sister’s kid just to get a little revenge between siblings. Regardless of the situation, we all can understand that having toys for children is crucial, but the cost can be overwhelming. In this blog post, we will provide practical tips and strategies to save money while still providing children with the benefits of playing with toys, just on a budget.

Buy Secondhand:

The first tip and one of my personal favorites is to buy second hand toys. These can be found almost everywhere at thrift stores, online marketplaces, and even local community groups at seriously low or reduced prices. Anyone can obtain high-quality toys at bargain prices if you know where to look and are willing to shop around a little. And for those of you that are environmentally conscious you would be helping reduce the amount of  waste at the same time.

Utilize Toy Libraries or consider renting:

Toy libraries I will have to admit was a relatively new idea that I discovered while doing some  research on articles such as this one. They allow parents to borrow toys instead of purchasing them, saving money and promoting a circular economy. Parents can find toy libraries in their local area by searching online or asking at their local public library. There are tons of Facebook groups dedicated to this idea as well and all seemed a lot easier to find than initially thought. It’s definitely worth a shot if you dont mind sharing toys. I thought that this would come in handy for a birthday party or a Nerf war instead of having to purchase everything but still have enough for all your guests. Which brings me to my next option, renting.Renting toys is an excellent option for parents who want access to a wide variety of toys without the commitment of ownership or having to come out of pocket. Parents can find reputable toy rental platforms and local businesses that offer toy rental services just about everywhere. I think you would be shocked if you knew how many people actually rent toys. Just think, most people probably wouldn’t go out and buy the Titanic Lego set on a whim or if they did have a place to display such a large piece. With renting you can get the joy and sense of accomplishment without the hefty price tags, and if you decide you love it that much once completed, then buy it!

Swap Toys with Friends or in Playgroups:

Similar to the options already mentioned is toy swapping, which is another great way to save money and promote community participation. Parents can organize toy swaps with friends or participate in local playgroups to swap toys. I personally witnessed this the other day with my own kids as they asked if they could trade hot wheels on the playground with other kids at school. Hesitant at first, but now i allow it after school with a few of the neighbor kids as long as the other parents agree.

A solution that has grown in popularity over the past few years and can be a more cost-effective solution is with do-it-yourself (DIY) projects or repurposing existing household items into quality homemade toys. There are plenty of resources available online to help parents in this category and you might be astonished to see how easy it can be to create your own DIY toys.

Another option that I like to remind people of is opting for open-ended toys such as building blocks, Legos, and play-doh which offer versatile play opportunities and can be used in various ways. These toys are more cost-effective in the long run as they can keep children and adults entertained for years.

Finally, set a budget and stick to it! Setting a toy budget and tracking expenses throughout the year can help avoid overspending. You can make sure to stick to the budget by keeping track of expenses with something as easy as keeping a list of what was purchased, how much you spent and on what day.

Your list might even come in handy while Researching and Comparing Prices before making your purchase. There are plenty of price comparison websites and customer reviews to help you make informed decisions such as this one, for more posts read my blog or sign up for the newsletter.

Waiting for sales and discounts before purchasing toys is a smart move to save money as well. You can sometimes save money just by signing up for newsletters, or following toy stores on social media, and using this website once you’re finished reading.

Buying toys during off-season sales can lead to significant savings for parents. Purchasing outdoor toys during the winter season or buying holiday-themed toys after the holidays can save parents money.

Conclusion:

Parents can save money on toys for their children by utilizing secondhand toys, toy libraries, waiting for sales and discounts, using open-ended toys, DIY and upcycling, toy swapping, toy rental, waiting for off-season sales, and doing thorough research. By following these tips and strategies, parents can provide their children with high-quality toys without breaking the bank. Parents are encouraged to try these strategies and share their success stories with others.
